Workshop Recap: "Global Climate Change Agenda and its Implications for Kyrgyzstan"

In a bid to delve into the pressing issue of climate change and its implications specifically for Kyrgyzstan, a workshop titled "Global Climate Change Agenda and its Implications for Kyrgyzstan" was held on April 1st at AUCA. The event is part of AUCA Climate Education Week and is organized by Sustainable AUCA and AUCA Green Club. The event featured prominent speaker Dastan Abdyldaev, a CVF Climate Diplomacy Fellow of 2023.听Dastan is a policymaker, expert and consultant with about 20 years of experience and track record in Kyrgyzstan's Government key positions as well as national projects. Experience on variety sectors with major expertise in climate finance-policy-diplomacy-strategy, A6-carbon market, environment, sustainable development policies as well as regional development, public administration and international relations.

The workshop commenced with a comprehensive analysis of temperature anomalies in Kyrgyzstan, drawing upon data from the Berkeley Earth graph spanning from 1860 to present day 2024. Attendees were presented with a visual representation showcasing observed temperature warming trends in Kyrgyzstan from 1940 to 2020, shedding light on the undeniable impact of global climate change on the region.

Central to the discussion was the examination of global atmospheric carbon dioxide emissions and the intricate carbon cycle. Understanding these mechanisms is crucial in comprehending the dynamics of climate change and its ramifications for Kyrgyzstan.

A significant portion of the workshop was dedicated to exploring the role of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and its milestones since its establishment in 1992. Special emphasis was placed on landmark events such as COP 21 and COP 26, held in Paris and Glasgow, respectively. These conferences have been instrumental in shaping global climate policy and fostering international cooperation in combating climate change.

Of particular interest was the presentation on Kyrgyzstan's Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), outlining the country's commitments to mitigating greenhouse gas emissions and adapting to the impacts of climate change. Financial support for both mitigation and adaptation measures, slated for 2030 and 2025 respectively, was discussed in detail, highlighting the importance of international assistance in bolstering Kyrgyzstan's resilience to climate change.
