The AUCA Law Debate Competition听for high school students from Central Asia


The AUCA Law Debate competition aims to provide high school students from Central Asia with an opportunity to come forward and experience the art of debating on legal issues. This will allow high school students to showcase their skills and get scholarships to study in one of the leading law programs in Central Asia.

WHAT ARE THE KEY DATES?

1. Last Date for Registration 鈥 March 24, 2021
2. Date of Competition 鈥 April 3,4, 2021

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?

The competition is open to all HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS (11th grade) across Central Asia.

WHAT IS THE PRIZE?

The first three winners will get scholarships to study at AUCA Law Program.
Certificates of participation will be given to all participants.

THE COMPETITION THEME

Law, rule of law, human rights.

DEBATE RULES

FORMAT听OF听THE听DEBATE

Participation shall be on an individual basis (1 vs. 1).

TIME LIMITS 听FOR EACH SPEAKER

Preliminary Rounds -听12 Minutes (including rebuttals) 听

Semi-Final Rounds -听15 minutes (including rebuttals)

Final Rounds -听20 Minutes (including rebuttals)

RULES

  • The debate will be held in English.
  • Since the debate will be conducted on an online platform, each participant鈥檚 video should be turned on throughout the round. However, the microphone should be turned on only when it is his/her chance to speak.
  • Exceeding the total time would attract negative marking.
  • The opinion of the speaker must be backed up by a legal principle, theory, or authority/source.
  • If a speaker cites facts, he/she must give full details of the news article, report, etc., from which the facts were cited.
  • The decision of the judges would be final.

DECORUM OF THE COMPETITION

All the Participants must observe a formal dress code on both days.

Only the first speaker is allowed to do 鈥淩ebuttal鈥. However, based on the discretion of the judges, the second speaker could be allowed to counter the 鈥淩ebuttal鈥.

During the 鈥渞ebuttal鈥 the speakers must adhere to the disciplinary guidelines that include:

  • There should not be any personal comments on the other speaker鈥檚 arguments/presentation.
  • The counter-points must be backed up by legal principles, theories, and other reports.
  • The speaker must stop speaking once his/her allotted time gets over. The moderator will inform about it. However, he/she may ask for an extension from the judges, and if allowed, he/she can continue.
