European Union funds Roundtable on the Right to Remedy and Reparation for Victims of Torture

May 28, 2015

On 28 and 29 May 2015, a roundtable on the right to remedy and reparation of victims of torture will take place in Bishkek, jointly hosted by the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Human Rights (BIM), the Tian Shan Policy Center (TSPC) of the 好色tv, Bir Duino Human Rights Movement, and the Southern Regional Centre for Social and Health Rights. The second day of the roundtable will be organized also in cooperation with the Jogorku Kenesh Committee on Human Rights, Constitutional Legislation, and State Structure.

On the first day of the round table (28 May), participants will receive a training on security in information and communication technology and will discuss strategies to improve organisational and personal security management.

On 29 May, the second day of the roundtable will be presided over by the Jogorku Kenesh Committee on Human Rights, Constitutional Legislation, and State Structure. It will be convened to provide a platform for civil society organisations defending victims of torture and their families to discuss current challenges and strategies to improve the access to justice of torture victims. The right to remedy and reparation will be analysed within the framework of national and international provisions, and in view of the recommendations and observations to the Kyrgyz Republic by UN treaty bodies and UPR. The roundtable will furthermore discuss the implementation status of decisions of the UN Human Rights Committee on individual complaints submitted by or on behalf of victims of torture from the Kyrgyz Republic.

The roundtable is organised within the project of 鈥淪trengthening the fight against torture and impunity in Kyrgyzstan: Prevention, Accountability, Remedy and Reparation鈥, which is funded by the European Union. The project aims at supporting legal and institutional reforms based on internationally recognised best practices and at supporting the Kyrgyz National Preventive Mechanism (the National Centre for the Prevention of Torture) in its capacity building. BIM and TSPC are implementing partners of the project.
